In a captivating twist of historical discovery, researchers in Barcelona have delved into the enigmatic world of the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes, uncovering a mystery that challenges our understanding of the past. This ancient Gothic monastery, founded by Queen Elisenda of Montcada in 1326, has revealed a startling secret that sheds light on the complexities of medieval burial practices.
The Mystery Unveiled
As part of a three-year excavation and research project, local officials have shared their findings, which have left historians and archaeologists alike intrigued. The opening of several tombs has led to an unexpected revelation: the identities historically assigned to these tombs do not match the remains found within. One such tomb, belonging to Artau de Foces, yielded a surprising discovery - not a male individual as expected, but the remains of two adult women and three children.
Unraveling the Layers of History
Enric Puga, the communications officer for the monastery, emphasized the significance of these findings. The number of skeletons and the presence of over 200 archaeological samples, including funerary offerings and preserved plants, have provided a unique glimpse into the funerary culture of the time. The alterations and re-openings of tombs suggest a dynamic and evolving burial process, challenging our traditional understanding of medieval burial practices.
The Abbess's Enigma
The tomb of Francesca Saportella, the second abbess of the monastery, presented an even more intriguing puzzle. Among the remains of at least nine individuals, some with weapon wounds, researchers found a mummified female trunk with fetal remains. The abbess herself was nowhere to be found among the identified remains, leaving historians with a fascinating mystery to unravel.
A Queen's Final Resting Place
In contrast, the tomb of Queen Elisenda revealed a more modest burial. Despite her royal status, she was buried in simple clothing, her remains showing signs of health conditions associated with old age. Through archaeobotanical analysis, researchers have identified different funerary rites, with plants like rosemary used for body preparation and floral offerings with symbolic significance.
Preserving the Past, Honoring the Future
The research project, conducted with the approval of the monastery's community of nuns, aims to honor Queen Elisenda's final will. While the project has recovered a portion of her genome, allowing for preliminary estimates of her pigmentation traits, all remains studied will be returned to their original burial locations, respecting the queen's wishes.
